چکیده

Algorithms based on local search are popular for solving many optimization problems including the maximum satisfiability problem (MAXSAT). With regard to MAXSAT, the state of the art in performance for universal (i.e. non specialized solvers) seems to be variants of Simulated Annealing (SA) and MaxWalkSat (MWS), stochastic local search methods. Local search methods are conceptually simple, and they often provide near optimal solutions. In contrast, it is relatively rare that local search algorithms are analyzed with respect to the worst-case approximation ratios. In the first part of the paper, we build on Mastrolilli and Gambardella’s work [14] and present a worst-case analysis of tabu search for the MAX-k-SAT problem. In the second part of the paper, we examine the experimental performance of determinstic local search algorithms (oblivious and non-oblivious local search, tabu search) in comparison to stochastic methods (SA and MWS) on random 3-CNF and random k-CNF formulas and on benchmarks from MAX-SAT competitions. For random Max-3-SAT, tabu search consistently outperforms both oblivious and non-oblivious local search, but does not match the performance of SA and MWS. Initializing with non-oblivous local search improves both the performance and the running time of tabu search. The better performance of the various methods that escape local optima in comparison to the more basic oblivious and non-oblivious local search algorithms (that stop at the first local optimum encountered) comes at a cost, namely a significant increase in complexity (which we measure in terms of variable flips). The performance results observed for the unweighted MAX-3-SAT problem carry over to the weighted version of the problem, but now the better performance of MWS is more pronounced. In contrast, as we consider Max-k-Sat as k is increased, MWS loses its advantage. Finally, on benchmark instances, it appears that simulated annealing and tabu search initialized with non oblivious local search outperform the other methods on most instances.

Scaling and Probabilistic Smoothing: Dynamic Local Search for Unweighted MAX-SAT

In this paper, we study the behaviour of the Scaling and Probabilistic Smoothing (SAPS) dynamic local search algorithm on the unweighted MAXSAT problem. MAX-SAT is a conceptually simple combinatorial problem of substantial theoretical and practical interest; many application-relevant problems, including scheduling problems or most probable explanation finding in Bayes nets, can be encoded and s...

Iterated Robust Tabu Search for MAX-SAT

MAX-SAT, the optimisation variant of the satisfiability problem in propositional logic, is an important and widely studied combinatorial optimisation problem with applications in AI and other areas of computing science. In this paper, we present a new stochastic local search (SLS) algorithm for MAXSAT that combines Iterated Local Search and Tabu Search, two well-known SLS methods that have been...

Backbone Guided Local Search for Maximum Satisfiability

Maximum satisfiability (Max-SAT) is more general and more difficult to solve than satisfiability (SAT). In this paper, we first investigate the effectiveness of Walksat, one of the best local search algorithms designed for SAT, on Max-SAT. We show that Walksat is also effective on Max-SAT, while its effectiveness degrades as the problem is more constrained. We then develop a novel method that e...

Reactive Search , a history - based heuristicfor MAX { SAT

The Reactive Search (RS) method proposes the integration of a simple history-based feedback scheme into local search for the on-line determination of free parameters. In this paper a new RS algorithm is proposed for the approximated solution of the Maximum Satissability problem: a component based on local search with temporary prohibitions is complemented with a reactive scheme that determines ...

Augmented Downhill Simplex a Modified Heuristic Optimization Method

Augmented Downhill Simplex Method (ADSM) is introduced here, that is a heuristic combination of Downhill Simplex Method (DSM) with Random Search algorithm. In fact, DSM is an interpretable nonlinear local optimization method. However, it is a local exploitation algorithm; so, it can be trapped in a local minimum. In contrast, random search is a global exploration, but less efficient. Here, rand...
